I just read the article from Vince Delmonte in the November 2010 issue of Iron Man Magazine entitled “10 Secret Muscle Building Tricks” – Go Against the Grain to Kick Start Gains
I have to tell you that I was a bit skeptical at first when I saw the article. I mean did this guy really have anything worthwhile to say or was he just another writer who’s never seen the inside of a gym, weighed more that a buck-fifty or squatted more than his own bodyweight? After all, there are a lot of self-proclaimed experts out there.
In all fairness, any muscle building program is only as good as the effort and determination that someone is willing to put into it. You’ll know by now, that most people limit themselves by their beliefs and by how hard they’re really willing to work in the gym.
Another way a lot of gym rats limit themselves in my opinion is they play “the rules game” and that’s where I think Vince’s article hit’s the mark. What the %@^# is the rules game, you ask? It’s the “I read that you’re supposed to lift heavy to get big.” Or “I read that you have to drink 3 whey protein shakes a day to gain muscle.” Both of those statements are true but what the guy repeating them is missing is that the body adapts to the same stimulus, the same patterns and sometimes the best rule is to break all the rules.
That’s where I think Vince hits the target with his article. He talks about very similar things that Charles Poliquin, Eric Broser, Steve Holman, Jonathan Lawson and others have said. Essentially it’s; learn the rules, follow them, throw them out, change them, follow them again, then throw them out again. Vince has 10 very good suggestions on just how to do that.
Here’s a few samples…
One… Flip your program upside down. If you’ve been doing chest first then legs and so on… switch it up for a week and do legs first and so on. Often a simple change will be just enough to get the muscles to pay attention again.
Two… Swap your sets and reps. This is an interesting one. Vince says if you’ve been doing 4 sets of 8 reps switch it and do 8 sets of 4 reps. Hey I’ve done that one in the past and it worked out well. Then go back to your normal routine.
Three… Drop your food supplements and focus on eating whole food. Now no one is suggesting that supplements don’t have their place. Remember the idea is to shake things up. For one week eat more whole food and back way off the supplements. It’ll kick your metabolism back into gear.
