While antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, have been recognized for their ability to protect the body from damage by free radicals’molecules that damage healthy cells and make you more susceptible to illness’there’s another weapon in the fight for health: pumping iron.
According to an article that appeared in the November ’00 issue of Prevention, ‘Researchers tested 62 people who lifted weights three times a week for six months against a control group that didn’t lift weights at all. The control group had a 13 percent increase in free-radical damage, which is typical as you age, but the exercising group had an increase of only 2 percent.’
As the author of the study, Kevin Vincent, Ph.D., of the University of Florida, concluded, ‘That’s a benefit only found before in high-intensity aerobic exercise.’ IM
