La Cour, Norman Cop Team Universe Bodybuilding Crowns
NEW YORK—Skip La Cour and Tonie Norman took the Men’s and Women’s Overall Bodybuilding titles, respectively, at the NPC Team Universe Championships, which were held August 9–10 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center on the campus of Borough of Manhattan Community College.

For the 40-year-old La Cour it was the second T.U. Overall victory in nine appearances at the show. The Walnut Creek, California, resident also won the top title in 1998. La Cour, who had placed 11th in the Heavyweight class at the USA Championships two weeks earlier, carried 216 pounds of deeply etched muscle on his 5’10” frame. He was the unanimous selection in both the Heavyweight class and Overall balloting. The other class winners included Jean-Claude Desardovine (Light Heavyweight), Angelo Bezzole (Middleweight), Rueben Dwyer (Welterweight), Owen McCurty Jr. (Lightweight) and Ronald Nurse (Bantamweight).

Norman, a firefighter out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who was second to Beth Eisenman by only one point in the Middleweights last year, showed up in her all-time-best condition at 5’4” and 122 pounds to score a unanimous victory this time around. While La Cour’s Overall victory was an easy pick for the judges, Norman engaged in a spirited posedown with Heavyweight winner Carolyn Bryant and Lightweight champion Tracie “TNT” Tucker before taking the Women’s Overall crown. All three women will represent the United States at the IFBB Women’s World Amateur Championships, which will be held in the Czech Republic on October 4–7.
