Youngblood Stops Taylor’s Masters O Streak
LYNCHBURG, Va.—Don Youngblood swore that lightening would not strike twice. A year ago the 5’11”, 247-pounder came out of nowhere to lead Vince Taylor after the prejudging at the Masters Olympia. Although Taylor came back in the final two rounds to escape with a narrow victory, Youngblood, who hadn’t competed since winning the Masters Nationals several years earlier, declared that Taylor’s five-year reign as the Masters O champion would end in 2002. The Arkansas Atlas made good on his prediction with a six-point victory at the event, held August 16-17. After Taylor edged Youngblood by a single digit in round 1, symmetry, Youngblood basically won the show with a strong showing in the next round, muscularity, which saw Taylor fall to third and gave Youngblood a six-point lead he never relinquished.

Three competitors who haven’t been onstage in many years—Norway’s Gier Borgan Paulsen, Pittsburgh’s David Hawk and Florida resident Chris Duffy, placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively. For more information on Youngblood’s triumph, read the News & Views in the December IRONMAN.
