The world just seems to work for those who know what their goals in life are. A goal is a success magnet. Once you set a goal worthy of your life, you will somehow be pulled toward that objective. People, circumstances and events will all seem to work for you. That’s true of any goal, and fitness is no exception.
Goals are the road map to your future. Walking through life with no goals is like driving cross-country with no road map—you will get somewhere, but it may not be where you wanted to go. Set your path with goals and see your dreams come true. Yogi Berra, the famous New York Yankee player and manager, put it this way, “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going because you might not get there.” That Yogi sure had a way with words, didn’t he? Here’s how to set your own goals:
Action step 1: List your passions. Energy is the fuel that ignites passion, and passion is the engine of success. Fill in the blank in the following sentence, and make a list of things you love: I am living the life of my dreams when I am.… The words in the blank must begin with a verb action relating to being, doing or having. For example, I am living the life of my dreams when I am helping people to live the life of their dreams.
Action step 2: Consider your list one item at a time and narrow it down to your top five passions. Copy them on a three-by-five-inch card, and carry it with you. Read it often.
Action step 3: On your list, write “Why?” next to each of those five passions. On another piece of paper write a paragraph explaining the reason you are committed to achieving it. Your “why” is very powerful.
Action step 4: For each of your top five passions put together an action list of things you would need to do to achieve them. These are your goals. It’s easier to set goals once you know what your passions are.
Action step 5: Divide your goals into three categories: short range (one month or less), midrange (one month to one year) and long range (one year or more). Again, you may need more paper.
Action step 6: For each of your top five passions, determine one action you can take today to get started on your goals, and write it down. The most important thing is to take action and start today, then adjust your course as needed.
Action step 7: For each of your top passions write down one or more habits you will need to develop to achieve your desired outcome. Imagine if you exchanged two limiting habits for two empowering habits every year. In five years that would be 10 empowering habits that you do without effort. HabitForge.com is a great tool to help you master your habits.
