What, you may ask, is the curious malady known as “trenbolone dick”?—or is it Dick Trenbolone? The answers to that and other pressing questions about a plethora of anabolic drugs is available in Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide by Anthony Roberts and Brian Clapp. The book is similar to other anabolic-drug guides in its format and layout. It provides comprehensive information about every drug used in bodybuilding and other athletics. This one, however, differs from similar references because of the humor throughout and its “I’m just like you” philosophy.
In addition, the book offers real-world feedback from Internet forums that focus on anabolic use. I have doubts about the veracity of anecdotal accounts, but there’s no doubt that Anthony Roberts isn’t the least bit reticent about his own extensive experimentation with anabolic substances over the years. Somehow he lived to tell about it in this book.
I had the opportunity to watch Roberts in action recently as he delivered a seminar on the history of anabolic steroids at the 2008 conference of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in Las Vegas. I can tell you that he was, without question, the most entertaining lecturer at that conference. I could barely suppress my guffaws as Roberts made numerous wry comments during his slide presentation.
Don’t get me wrong: Roberts isn’t some frustrated comedian who was secretly auditioning for the opening act at a Vegas lounge. The guy knows his stuff and seems to be a human encyclopedia when it comes to anabolics. His book reflects both his wonderful sense of humor and his extensive knowledge. Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide manages to both entertain and inform, a rare commodity in the reference arena. IM
