If you're currently taking a protein supplement, you're in for an eye-opener. Most of us understand that protein is important for supporting muscle growth, but very few people understand how protein actually exerts its anabolic, or muscle-building, effects. For a complete understanding of protein's role in muscle building'plus a heads-up on groundbreaking research on a new protein technology for never-before-seen stimulation of extreme muscle growth'you've come to the right place.
Protein is essential for building muscle tissue, but muscle growth can occur only if your body retains more nitrogen (from protein) than it loses. That creates an anabolic state referred to as positive nitrogen balance.
If you don't get an adequate continual supply of protein, your body goes into a state of negative nitrogen balance and muscle loss occurs. Bodybuilders and athletes are particularly at risk because heavy exercise leads to increased nitrogen loss and muscle breakdown.
So the solution to preventing muscle wasting and packing on huge amounts of muscle seems simple: Take in large amounts of protein. Most bodybuilders take protein supplements religiously and eat a lot of protein, but they aren't packing on muscle the way science defines protein's'that is, nitrogen's'anabolic effects on muscle growth. What's the problem?
The Key to Overcoming Protein's Limitations in Enhancing Muscle Growth
Protein's limitations in creating and maintaining an anabolic environment have remained a mystery to the scientific community. If a positive nitrogen balance from protein is the anabolic stimulus needed for muscle growth and if anabolic agents like steroids and growth hormone effect tremendous gains in muscle mass just by increasing nitrogen retention, then why doesn't eating large amounts of high-quality proteins'like whey, casein, soy and egg'produce the expected gains in muscle mass? That was the challenge for the senior research staff at MHP'to find out why protein didn't fulfill its scientific promise as a highly anabolic nitrogen source.
The researchers analyzed every known natural source of protein for its amino acid composition (AAC), biological value (BV), protein digestibility correct amino acid score (PDCAAS), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and rate of absorption (RA)'the rate at which the protein releases amino acids. They also analyzed the amino acid composition of human muscle tissue and the effects of resistance training on nitrogen depletion and muscle tissue remodeling.
Their findings uncovered many myths and misconceptions about protein, which helped them understand why protein did not meet anabolic expectations. It also led them to the realization that no protein in nature was capable of exerting the desired anabolic effects. The only way to achieve the nitrogen retention needed for the desired anabolic effects was to bioengineer a protein to make up for its deficiencies in nature.
They found that the two biggest challenges in bioengineering a more powerful anabolic protein were altering both the protein's amino acid composition and its release rate. After years of research and development, MHP's research team made two of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of protein manufacturing'the identification of the anabolically critical five amino acids and the introduction of a patented sustained-release delivery system, microfeed technology.
The World Health Organization and protein manufacturers commonly use the PDCAAS method to rate the quality of protein. Protein manufacturers have also been using that method to determine the values of their proteins, and while proteins such as whey, casein, soy and egg all have perfect scores of 100, we saw two major methodological flaws:
1) The score is based on preschool children's protein needs. We know that an adult bodybuilder's protein needs are far greater than those of a preschool child.
2) It takes into account only essential amino acids; not included are the very important 'conditionally essential' amino acids arginine and glutamine.
Extensive research on the amino acid composition of protein and muscle tissue determined that the five most important aminos for muscle growth in response to training are glutamine, arginine and the branched-chain amino acids'leucine, isoleucine and valine. They provide the highest anabolic response and are needed to support muscle tissue remodeling in response to heavy training. Thanks to the efforts of MHP R&D, they're what the protein industry is now calling the critical five. As a result, a new standard in measuring the value of a protein has been established: the critical five amino acid score, or CFAAS. CFAAS measures the amount of these very important amino acids in a protein source.
Glutamine
It's the most abundant amino acid found in muscle tissue, making up approximately 60 percent of all muscle. Glutamine levels are rapidly depleted during exercise and without optimal levels, muscle breakdown and loss occur. Glutamine is known to promote anabolic conditions in muscle cells and increase the rate of protein synthesis, increase the cell volume of muscles, aid in recovery, prevent muscle breakdown and spur the release of HGH.
ALLBCAAs
The branched-chain amino acids'leucine, isoleucine and valine'are the next most abundant and make up approximately 33 percent of all muscle. BCAAs are heavily catabolized, or broken down and used for energy, during exercise, and if you're deficient in them, your body uses valuable muscle tissue for fuel. Unfortunately, the body can't make its own BCAAs, and people who work out experience a dramatic increase in the need for them. By maintaining optimal levels through supplementation, you can protect muscle, improve recovery and endurance and maximize muscle growth.
Arginine
It increases nitric oxide production, which is the muscle's 'cell-signaling' molecule, responsible for blood flow, oxygen delivery, nutrient delivery and uptake, velocity, power output and growth. The increased blood flow supplies more protein and nutrients to your muscles for increased size, fullness and thickness, full-body pumps, strength, vascularity and improved recovery. Arginine also triggers GH release.
Patented Microfeed Technology
With all of the new protein research going on at MHP, it's no wonder that the company's biochemists have developed and patented what some are calling the biggest breakthrough ever in protein supplementation. What they're talking about is a 12-hour microfeed technology that improves protein's bioavailability for better utilization and increased anabolic and anticatabolic effects.
The new pharmaceutical-delivery system is designed to provide a continual supply of amino acids for up to 12 hours. The microfeed technology works like an IV drip, supplying a metered dose of high concentrations of the critical five aminos so that you always stay in an extremely anabolic state and never slip into a catabolic state. The technology also increases bioavailability, fostering 100 percent uptake of every gram of protein'no wasted protein, no wasted muscle.
To fully appreciate how important the microfeed technology breakthrough is, let me fill you in on some findings regarding protein's true biological value, use and ability to maintain a positive nitrogen balance:
In addition to the PDCAAS, the protein industry and scientists have also been using BV as a measure of protein quality. Many proteins, such as whey and whole egg, have a perfect score of 100, which suggests that you use every gram you eat. Not so. Biological value is based on low-dose consumption'only nine to 18 grams of protein. In larger doses, such as 40 to 60 grams, the amount bodybuilders commonly eat, not all of the protein is used, and some of it is converted to the waste products urea and ammonia. That helps explain why big doses of protein don't produce the desired anabolic effects you might expect.
The research also found that the varying release rates of proteins influence their BV, uptake and ability to supply nitrogen. While the whey industry has done a good job of leading you to believe that faster is better in terms of release rates, new studies show that slower-releasing proteins provide greater anabolic and anticatabolic effects. Therefore, the ideal protein would provide fast, medium and slow release rates. It's important to realize that when it comes to building muscle, anticatabolic properties are just as important as anabolic ones. In fact, most doctors and scientists credit the anticatabolic more than the anabolic effects of steroids with gains in muscle.
After four years of research and development MHP has put its research efforts to work for you. The company's scientists have pioneered a major breakthrough in protein supplementation called Probolic-SR. The 12-hour timed-release bioengineered protein has set new standards in protein quality, bioavailability and anabolic and anticatabolic potential. Its patented technologies overcome protein's natural limitations on nitrogen retention and muscle growth. Probolic-SR is the first and only protein to supply adequate amounts of nitrogen on a continual basis to create the anabolic and anticatabolic environment needed for hyperbolic muscle growth.
Four-Stage Release Feeds Muscle Around the Clock and Prevents Muscle Breakdown
Probolic-SR is the only protein to provide a four-stage delivery, making it the ideal anytime protein. The precisely formulated blend of proteins gives you a fast, medium and slow release of amino acids and is further prolonged by the patented microfeed technology. The advanced release profile supplies the needed quick release (zero to two hours) of amino acids for postworkout replenishment of nitrogen. It's also perfect preworkout because its medium and slower release (hours two to six) keep supplying aminos and keep you in an anabolic state throughout your entire workout, preventing a catabolic state. When taken before bedtime, Probolic-SR's microfeed technology supplies high levels of the critical five aminos and keeps you anabolic around the clock, ensuring that you never slip into catabolism between meals, during workouts or while you sleep. It's truly advanced technology for extreme muscle building.
