Bodybuilders get protein at every meal in order to keep the muscles bathed in growth-promoting amino acids.
There appears to be another benefit: Protein causes an insulin release but minimizes it so your blood sugar stays more stable.
According to the March ’12 Prevention, “Even though protein contains no glucose, it triggers a ‘first-phase insulin response’ that occurs so fast, it keeps your blood sugar from rising as high later—and reduces the total amount of insulin you need to handle a meal.”
