Brian Casad Turns Fat-Boy Comments Into Fuel for Victory
Some people fall victim to life challenges, while others take a setback and use it to fuel the giant inside of them—in the most positive way. We typically think of bullying as a physical confrontation, but experts know that it can come in the form of crude comments about a person’s appearance or attractiveness. If the bully happens to be a popular, pretty girl at a party—well, harsh words can be just what someone like Brian Casad will use to spark a life-changing transformation and launch a successful career as a gym owner. Now Brian inspires others. Let’s find out how.
DY: What was the event that sparked your interest in bodybuilding and fitness modeling?
BC: I always loved sports. I was a fairly athletic kid, but unlike others around me my adolescence kept me at that short, chubby, awkward, fat stage. It was a day like no other, my first sixth-grade party. It was a big deal because the sixth grade was like going to college for elementary students in my town. Let’s just say the excitement was running strong, until one of the popular girls said, Why is your fat ass at this party? I tried to hold my composure and be cool by saying something back, but it was too late—she had cut me deep. I ran home to my mother and cried. It was one of the worst days of my adolescent life because it sticks out so vividly in my mind.
DY: An incident like that can take you down, or it can fuel your desire to change. Is that what happened?
BC: You’ve got that right. After that day I picked up a weight and said no more. I never looked back, and the rest is history. I had all the determination I needed. I kicked ass all through high school in everything that I did, including powerlifting, football, baseball and wrestling. But I lost sight once I entered college. I made a lot of bad choices, eventually learning from them to find my way once again. My passion was hidden and fogged over in college, but I never lost it. It came back after I worked a desk job and found out that’s definitely not for me! In fact, it came back with a vengeance, causing me to lose 40 pounds and get lean and mean once again; the vision was there, and the motivation was back!

DY: So you turned a setback into an advantage once again. What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into his or her best shape?
