All we know is that the antioxidant flavonoids in cocoa, which have been known to benefit the cardiovascular system, are now thought to boost brainpower as well. Researchers at the University of Tübingen Medical School in Germany claim that the flavonoids in cocoa promote neurogenesis and connectivity in brain regions that are involved with learning and memory. The study explains how long-term flavonoid consumption protects the brain against age- and disease-related cognitive decline in animals.
