LOS ANGELES – Memorial Day weekend 2011 activities at Venice Beach Recreation Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility at 1800 Ocean Front Walk, will include powerlifting and bodybuilding competitions, boxing, live music, and more.
The schedule of events is:
• Saturday, May 28: Muscle Beach Sumo Classic. Entry Fee $40. Event starts at 1 pm.
• Sunday, May 29: Martial Arts at Muscle Beach, stick fighting, hand to hand combat demos and “brick smashing”. Dance performances and live entertainment.
• Sunday, May 29: “Rumble in Venice” amateur boxing from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with bouts sanctioned by USA Boxing matching members of different military branches, National Collegiate Boxing Association institutions (including USC and UCLA), and USA Boxing affiliated clubs.
• Monday, May 30: The Muscle Beach International Classic & Armed Forces Championship bodybuilding, figure, and bikini contests, which is open to all amateur athletes. The entry fee is $80. In conjunction with this will be the “Battle of the Branches” Armed Forces Bodybuilding Championships, which is open to all active, reserve, National Guard, and retired armed forces personnel. The entry fee is $80. Prejudging for both competitions will be at 10:00 a.m., with the finals at 1:00 p.m.
Elaine Lalanne will be in attendance as Muscle Beach pays it’s final farewell to Jack. Award winning actor RYAN PHILLIPE and boxing sensation SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY will present Rich Gaspari – 1989 winner of the 1st Arnold Classic, the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame Award. Parade of Athletes/National Anthem begin at 1:00 p.m. and include a March Air Reserve Base C-17 flyover.
At the conclusion of the competition the USAF Music Ensemble “Mobility” (rock band) will perform from 4 – 6 pm.
Representatives of military branches will have recruitment booths and static displays, and vendors from the health and fitness industry will be on hand with information and giveaways all three days.
