Many bodybuilders realize that an excess of the stress hormone cortisol can cause the body to cannibalize muscle tissue. Studies done with endurance and anaerobic athletes show that supplementing with 800 milligrams of phosphatidylserine can control cortisol by more than 30 percent, but there’s a bonus: It also helps your mind.
What is PS? It’s a naturally occurring soy lipid—without the phytoestrogens. According to the July ’14 Better Nutrition, “[PS] is a waxy substance that is a key building block of healthy cell membranes. Studies of more than 1,000 people show that it can help relieve ADHD and memory problems in children, age-related memory loss later in life and symptoms of diagnosed Alzheimer’s or other dementia.”
It’s also suggested that combining PS with omega-3 supplements can supercharge the mind and muscle effects.
