According to The New England Journal of Medicine, a study of more than 350,000 people found that a large waistline can almost double a person’s risk of dying prematurely, even if bodyweight is in the normal range. That’s because fat deposits around the waist—visceral fat—are the most dangerous. They can encroach on internal organs, and the fat secretes harmful inflammatory substances that can contribute to numerous diseases.
