If you read the interview I did with Troy Alves in IRON MAN a couple of months back, you may remember the 44-year-old saying, without question, he would win a contest in 2011. Alves has played the Swami role to perfection this season: he made the prediction come true with a victory at the Europa in Hartford, Connecticut last month, then added a second title to his resume on Saturday, winning the Phoenix Pro in front of his hometown fans.
Alves, the 5’8″, 215-pounder who I tabbed “the modern day Frank Zane” several years back, used that beautiful symmetry to combine with on-the-spot conditioning to best runner-up Hidetada Yamagishi and third place finisher Ed Nunn. Marcus Haley finished fourth, and Alfonso DelRio rounded out the top five.
